Introduction To The Bible

The following post is a brief outline about the Bible.  It begins with what the Bible says about itself and then it gives a few interesting facts about the Bible.  This summary is too brief and does not answer many important questions that you might ask.  It serves as a place holder for now.            .

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

2 Peter 3:16 (ESV)
16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.

16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

The Bible is God’s written revelation of his will to man II Tim 3:16-17; II Pet 1:21

The Bible’s central theme through both the OT and the NT is Jesus Christ I Tim 3:16

The OT was written mostly in Hebrew and the NT mostly in Greek

The Bible contains 66 books written by 40 authors over a time of some 1600 years.

The OT contains 39 books and the NT 27.  (Remember 3X9=27)

There are 1,189 chapters in the Bible.  Read 3 or 4 a day to read it in a year.

There are 31,095 verses in the Bible.  Read 86 or 87 a day to read them in a year

The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalms 119

The shortest chapter in the Bible is Psalms 117

The longest book in the OT is Psalms

The longest book in the NT is Luke

Isaiah is like a mini Bible with 66 chapters and it is naturally divided into two parts, the first 39 chapters and the last 27 chapters.
